El Primo Sanchez holds pop up for World Mezcal Day

In celebration of World Mezcal Day on Saturday 21 October, cult Mexican cocktail bar and restaurant El Primo Sanchez will be popping up for a one day only special event at Double Bay’s Golden Sheaf.

Starting from midday, there will be free tastings of more than 30 mezcals from 11 regions across Mexico. Delicious Mexican bites such as pulled pork tacos, zucchini flower quesadillas and chicken tinga tostadas will be served by Rosa Cienfuegos, owner of by Dulwich Hill’s Tamaleria & Mexican Deli.

At 2pm, El Primo Sanchez will take over the rooftop bar, serving four different cocktails to show off the beauty of mezcal. The menu will include the Afternoon in Wahaka, made using Wahaka Resposado, citrus syrup, lime and orange oleo, as well as the Martini De La Abuela, mixing Vago Espadin, dry vermouth, Granny Smith oleo and clarified apple.

Later in the day, Taqiza Bondi will take over the rooftop cocktails from 4pm. Taquiza’s three cocktails will include the Don’t Call Me Cherrie made with mezcal, Mr Black coffee liqueur, Cherry Heering and cacao, and the Smoke On The Water….Melon, featuring Origen Raiz Cenizo Mezcal, watermelon, grapefruit and chipotle.

The Golden Sheaf’s own mezcal cocktail menu will be available throughout the day, featuring a classics like the Mezcal Tommys and a Watermelon Margarita, both made with Origen Raiz Mezcal.

Balter has also joined in on the celebrations as a partner, with its Australian-made Mexican lager beer, Balter Cerveza, available throughout the venue.

Solotel’s Bars Manager and mezcal afficionado Reece Griffiths is excited to champion the spirit.

“It isn’t quite as industrial as tequila and has more interesting varietals as it’s made from a larger variety of agave plants,” Reece explained.

“While it’s known for its smokey flavour, it can also be tropical and complex depending on where in Mexico it is from,” he added.

The event will also feature live music, including a mariachi brand, celebrating mezcal’s Mexican heritage.
