Australian Liquor Industry Awards 2020: Be there!

The 2020 Australian Liquor Industry Awards (ALIA) are taking place on 21 October – more information coming soon!

ALIA sees over 600 members of the industry gather to celebrate another successful year and recognise the best brand, people, venues and operators of the last 12 months.

Recognising the best of both the on- and off-premise, bars, hotels, retailers and suppliers the night sees over 50 awards presented including 12 major awards.

Every year ALIA has a theme, which helps make it the fun night that it is, and last year everyone got their groove on with the 70s Disco theme. The night lived up to its billing, with The Star full of disco fever.

There were some great moments in the 2019 event, including a tie for Bar Manager of the Year between Alexandra Dahlenburg of Mjølner in Sydney; and Jamie Fleming of Alba Bar & Deli in Brisbane.

Dahlenburg told Bars&Clubs: “The people in that category, some I’m proud to call my friends, are all so deserving. I feel we’ve got so many awesome people who are doing great things, people who I would love to work with so I didn’t think I’d stand a chance. I stand corrected and it feels wonderful, especially sharing it with Jamie Fleming who’s killing life right now.”

Another exciting win was the major award for Bar Group Operator of the Year, taken out this year by Applejack Hospitality after being sitting in the Highly Commended spot for four years running.

Co-Founder, Ben Carroll, was understandably delighted with the win, he told Bars and Clubs: “Highly Commended is a great accolade particularly when you are getting pipped at the post by some incredible operators. But this year is our year and how sweet that feeling is.”

The other major awards saw Bar of the Year go to Sydney’s Maybe Sammy, Lion taking out On-premise Supplier of the Year, and Bartender of the Year named as The Gresham’s Millie Tang.

Tang couldn’t make it to the event, being overseas competing in the Licor 43 Global Final (which she went on to win with event partner Jessie Williamson), but told later told Bars&Clubs: ” It never even crossed my mind that I’d receive this award, I was pretty floored that I was even nominated and am stoked to have been included amongst a line-up of absolute industry killers.”

The full list of the On-Premise Awards for 2019 is below – but the real question is, who will follow in the footsteps of these deserving winners in 2020?
