NOLA’s big plans for Rye July

By Rachel Clark

NOLA Bar and Smokehouse in Barangaroo, which stocks over 600 bottles of American whiskey, is celebrating rye whiskey for a full month of special events and offers.

Glen Wheeler, bar manager at NOLA, says that with rye whiskey being “a relatively new category for the Australian market… it is, in part our responsibility to educate the consumer.”

Events include a masterclass on 14 July – a two-hour course on the study of rye whiskey – with SouthTrade ambassador and whiskey expert Gee David. David will be taking those in attendance through the history of rye whiskey and the production of the product.

NOLA has also teamed up with a neighbour, Oh Boo Chocolates, to create a unique opportunity to taste the perfect pairing of sweet, spicy and salty chocolates with four different rye whiskeys.

The bar will also offer guests its signature whiskey flights, including both American and Canadian rye flights, as well as a special Rye July cocktail, The Red Hook – a combination of Wild Turkey Rye with Punt e Mes and maraschino.

With its vast collection of rare and boutique rye whiskeys, and a passionate, educated bar staff, Wheeler adds that the team at NOLA are excited for Rye July to begin.

“Combining a few activities and experiences into Rye July will hopefully draw some attention to rye whiskey and be a great education tool for consumers,” Wheeler says.
