Idle Hour Vodka celebrates World Vodka Day with tri-city cocktail challenge

The Melbourne Idle Spring Time Sour cocktail made in celebration of World Vodka Day

In the modern day, vodka often takes a back seat on the liquor shelf, but Australian rye vodka Idle Hour is on a mission to bring back the love and appreciation of the spirit.

Today, Wednesday 4 October, Idle Hour has teamed up with a trio of prominent Australian bars to celebrate the artistry of the spirit for World Vodka Day, hoping to rekindle the magic of vodka and redefine its perception.

The three distinguished cocktail bars in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane will each showcase a vodka-based cocktail that encapsulates the unique spirit of the city. Ewen Pettit, Co-Fonder and Director of Idle Hour Vodka, expressed the brand’s commitment to reigniting the nations love of vodka.

“Idle Hour Vodka is all about savouring life’s idle moments and transforming them into cherished memories. We’re dedicated to shaping the vodka experience by highlighting the intricate flavours, textures and characteristics that our premium rye vodka offers. This World Vodka Day, we invite everyone to rediscover the true essence of vodka.”

The first cocktail, crafted by Alex Boon for Melbourne’s Pearl Diver Cocktail and Oyster Bar is the Melbourne Idle Spring Time Sour.

“Spring has sprung in Melbourne and this cocktail is all about showcasing the vibrancy of the city,” said Alex. “Using seasonal ingredients sourced from Melbourne farmers, I wanted to create a bright and vibrant cocktail that used Idle Hour Vodka as the platform to showcase the seasonal-specific flavours that also pay homage to this iconic city, its European influence and culture.”

Next up is the Brisbane Brown Snake Sunset, created by Edward Quartermass for Death and Taxes Bar.

“Brisbane is a city where most activity follows the river, we all want to be near it or looking at it whilst having a bevvy in the arvo if we can’t be on the coast. This cocktail celebrates those seasonal Brisbane afternoons, linking the rye based Idle Hour Vodka with the heightened tropical notes that are synonymous with life in Queensland,” Edward commented.

Finally, Sydneysiders can head to the Swinging Cat Bar to sample the Sydney Almost Gibson, a cocktail creation by Simon Rose-Hopkins.

“This all Australian affair was designed to bring some savoury notes to the classic gin-based Gibson Martini, using Idle Hour Unfiltered Vodka partnered with Regal Rouge Daring Dry Vermouth.

“It amplifies the spiced full-bodied flavours of the vodka, giving a bold taste, much like Sydney. Paired with the quintessential pickled cocktail onion, it is the perfect martini for a hot Sydney summers day or a cold winters night.”
