The Australian low-alcohol spirit hitting global trends

Adriane McDermott is an experienced marketer, having been twice selected one of the Top 50 Chief Marketing Officers in Australia, who also has over 25 years’ experience in roles at companies like Diageo, Nike and David Jones.

When Adriane was in lockdown in 2020, she noticed she was making more at-home cocktails and also went on a journey discovering Australian botanicals through her gin blog Ginfolly. She also saw some of the key global trends happening in the drinks industry in particular lower alcohol and health & wellbeing. All those factors came together and Tanica was born.

Adriane and Brand Creative Director, Kate Napier, worked together on the product and the branding, and what started off as blending native flavours and designing a bottle to make something delicious and visually appealing, has now turned into a mission to inspire more mindful drinking.

Tanica (short for botanical) launched in November 2021, has a growing fan base and big ambitions for new flavours, formats and new markets over time.

“We wanted to create a drink with a beachside vibe that embraced all the amazing botanicals used in Australian gins and summer cocktails, but without the downsides,” explains Adriane.

The two lighter alcohol and lower calorie blends, Tanica No. 1 Salted Plum & Ginger and Tanica No. 2 Desert Lime & Thyme, are full of flavour, and a great base for bartenders to create flavour-forward low-alcohol cocktails through the silly season.

The former is a rosé colour blended with plum, Murray River pink salt flakes, strawberry gum extract from Western Australia and a hint of ginger. The latter is a cloudy, lemon hue that looks right at home in a margarita, a crisp citrus blend of QLD desert lime puree, Yuzu juice, thyme and elderflower. Both are perfect to sip all day or night and to be kind to yourself without missing out on the fun.

A simple mix with sparkling soda water over ice, garnish with berries, citrus or fresh herbs and you have delicious low cal, low alcohol sundowners in no time – without compromising on your health goals.

Tanica also ticks all the boxes on better-for-you: low in organic cane sugar, gluten free, vegan, no artificial sweeteners and made with native and natural ingredients. Click here to see some Tanica cocktail options.
